 Teaching History Through Music
 
Course:  U.S. History II
Grade Level:  High School Seniors

Objective: As part of a unit on the history of the 1960's in the United States, students will acquire an understanding and appreciation of the music and events of the decade.

Specific Objective:  Students will be able to identify how the youth movement, culture and events
of the decade were reflected in the music of the decade.

Materials:

Text
Music
Computer with Internet Access
C.D., cassette or record player
Books about 1960s music.

Procedures:
Teacher will ask the students if they know any popular music from the 1960s. Students and teachers will brainstorm and try to identify popular songs and musicians from the 1960s.
Teacher will discuss the events of the decade and the mood of society.
Students will listen to popular music from the 1960s.  Students will visit web sites, study books and discuss and compare the music with the events in history to see how the music reflected the events of the decade.
 
Activity:  Students write an essay describing how the history of the decade was reflected in the music of the 1960s.

Evaluation:  Students will be graded on the participation in discussions, effort and final product.
