The Changes in America During the Early 1900ís: Immigration

You are provided with an identity of a person living in or immigrating to the United States during the early 1900ís.  Take this identity and write a three-paragraph essay describing their experiences.  Your resources are unlimited.  Here are a few suggestions:

w        Your notes from class.

w        Help from a grandparent or friend who may have lived during this time.

w        What your parents may know about their parents during that time.

w        Books or encyclopedia.

w        The Internet.

I recommend taking the Ellis Island tour so you can see what happened as the immigrants entered the United States.  You can take this tour right from your computer by going to:

You can also use the Ellis Island website:

I am a 32-year-old, male, American factory worker.  I have a wife and a 13-year-old son.  I work and we live in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, which is directly across from Staten Island, New York.  We live in a small two-bedroom apartment two blocks from the factory I work at.  I work from 5:00 in the morning until 3:00 at night and make just enough money to pay my rent and put food on the table for my family.

My family has been here since the middle of the 1700ís.  I have great-grandparents who fought in the Revolutionary War with General George Washington and grandparents who fought in the Civil War with the army from the North.

How does this person and his family feel about immigration?
