Course: U.S. History I I
Grade Level: High School Seniors
Objective: As part of a unit on the history of the 1960's in the United States, students will acquire an understanding and appreciation of the art of the decade.
Specific Objective: Students will be able to identify various popular artists and styles of art popular in the 1960s as well as the different styles of art that were produced during this period. Students will be able to explain how the art was reflective of the events of the decade.
Materials:
Art books
Web sites re: 1960s art
Paper
Art supplies: Paints, brushes, colored markers, crayons, etc
Procedures:
Teacher will ask the students to brainstorm on what life
was like for Americans in the 1960s.
Teacher will discuss the events of the decade and the mood of
society, (Civil Rights Movement, Vietnam, Student Protests, Counter Culture,
Youth Movement, etc.)
Teacher will show students samples of the art produced in the
period by showing samples of work directly out of textbooks, internet web
sites and art books or by showing an art slide show. Teacher will
discuss various artists and compare the artists with the styles.
Activity: Students will demonstrate their understanding
of the period by create their own 1960's style art/posters.

Evaluation: Students will be graded on the participation
in discussions, effort and final product.

This web site discusses how Warhol's art reflected the social issues
of the 1960's and his reaction to this through his paintings.
This site also shows samples of art that Warhol created in the 1960's.
Art Museum Network:
This web site takes you to any museum in the country that you would
like to visit. Many sites include slide shows and virtual tours.
The site also enables you to pick a topic such as "Artists of the 1960s".
