Secondary Education
                             in
New Jersey

Obviously middle schools and high schools in New Jersey were created to control the growing population of students attending public schools.  Until they were built, all grades were housed in the same building.
Again I chose Woodbridge Township as a model for what many of the early high schools in New Jersey were like.  Woodbridge High School, which now serves as the middle school, was built in 1910.  Before this, high school students took classes in whatever building they could fit in.  The much needed high school cost $70,000 to erect.  Many people of the Woodbridge community opposed the school because of this.  However, in 1910 Governor Fort of New Jersey, laid the cornerstone of what would become the first high school in Woodbridge.
The students of Woodbridge High School followed a strict dress code.  Boys wore a jacket and tie to school everyday.  While girls would not be seen in anything but long skirts, blouses, and dresses.  Eventually as enrollment increased, the small high school became extremely crowded.  Woodbridge High School was forced to hold double sessions to accommodate all students.  This continued for twenty years until the current Woodbridge Senior High School was built.
