New Jersey and the Making of
The Constitution
New Jersey and "New Jerseyans" played
an instrumental role in the Revoutionary War, the Critical Period, and
the creation of The Constitution. New Jersey is often called
the "crossroads of the revolution." Colonial and British troops fought
for control of the state and fought a few major battles and numerous skirmishes
on New Jersey soil. Who has not been told the story of Washingtion
crossing the Delaware River to attack the Hessians hungover from celebrating
the holidays.
New
Jersey was one of the first state's to complete its own Constitution in
1776 and was one of the state's most affected by the ineffectiveness of
the Articles of Confederation. While trying to hold onto the rights
of smaller states, New Jersey representatives played a major role at the
Constitutional Convention creating a stronger government. Listed
below are several instrumental documents, events, and people involved in
the infancy of our nation between 1776 and the Ratification of The Constitution.
