Reading List

There have been many history books written about the Civil
War. Here are a few which focus on New Jersey and the Civil War:
- Slavery and Freedom in the Rural North African
Americans in Monmouth County, New Jersey, 1665-1865 by Graham Russell Hodges, Madison House, Madison, l997: This book
chronicles the rural life of an entire community over the course of two centuries,
involving the emancipating of slaves of the South.
- New Jersey and the Civil War by Earl Schenck
Miers, D. Van Nostrand Company, Inc., Princeton, New Jersey, l964: This book offers
31 first-hand accounts written by New Jerseyans who participated in the Civil War.
- New Jersey, A History by Thomas Fleming, W.W.
Norton & Company, Inc. 1984: This book discusses New Jersey history from the
beginning to the present. There are several chapters that address New Jersey's
participation in the Civil War.
