What is Capoeira?
Capoeira is an aspect of Afro-Brazilian culture and a Brazilian martial art form created by slaves during Brazil's Colonial Era (16th century). Slaves used Capoeira to escape from the slave quarters and resist the often-brutal punishments applied against them by landowners. To protect the practice of their art, capoeristas introduced musical instruments to disguise it as dance. Today Capoeira is deeply embedded in the daily cultural life of native Brazilians. Having both characteristics of dance and fighting, Capoeira is regarded as both a sport and cultural activity. In North America and other continents, Capoeira has been introduced at schools to promote the culture and sport of Brazil. Capoeira is an art form created for the hope of freedom by those enslaved in the Brazilian sugar cane plantations. Further, our legacy is to perpetuate this freedom by respecting each student's capabilities to develop their skills not only for Capoeira , but for life in general. |
