| When the Civil War began, blacks were not allowed into the Union army or the Confederate army. After Emancipation they were free to fight on the Union side, and more than 180,000 signed up. A third of them were dead or missing by the time the war was over. The Confederate army never allowed black soldiers, but used slaves as laborers and officers' servants. |
