| The first black regiment in the war, the Fifty-fourt Massachussets Volunteers, attacks Fort Wagner, South Carolina, in July 1863. Many whites had predicted that blacks would make poor soldiers, but this battle proved their courage. One sergeant won the Congressional Medal of Honor for his outstanding bravery in the action. |
